The key is to have the right person to manage the process.
Brian Stilwell, Consultant
Brian has over 36 years of City experience, working in the institutional fund management industry for Barclays Global Investors and its predecessor companies. During the last decade, Brian spent an increasing amount of his time specifically focusing on corporate governance issues, helping refine executive remuneration packages and also discussing board structure, succession and performance with relevant board members.

Whilst looking for broad adherence with the spirit of the Combined Code, his philosophy was to recognise that no two companies are the same and to look at each situation on its own merits, always considering what was in the best interest of shareholders. As a result of his experience and working closely with other large investors, Brian has a particularly strong awareness of the expectations of institutional shareholders.

Brian spent most of his career as a fund manager/client director, actively managing portfolios for a range of clients, including local authority and corporate pension funds, charities and unit trusts. Brian valued the personal relationships he built with his clients and, helped by consistently above benchmark investment performance, some client mandates were retained for over 25 years. His area of specialisation was UK equities and a key element of his role was to meet and build relationships with the management of a large number of investee companies, where he questioned company strategy and management performance.
