Martin Jay has enjoyed a long and successful career in the electronics, defence & engineering industries.
After completing his MA at New College, Oxford in 1961, Martin Jay began his career with BP. Followed by a move to GEC plc in 1969 where he held a number of leadership positions including Managing Director of Information Services (until 1985) and also membership of the Management Board (from 1980-85). Martin was appointed Managing Director of Lewmar plc from 1985 – 1987. He then returned to GEC where he became Managing Director of the GEC plc’s Electronic Components Division of GEC plc from 1987–89.
Appointed as Chief Executive at VT Group plc (prev. Vosper Thornycroft Hldgs) Martin served for 13 years until 2002, and then served as Chairman until July 2005. In 2006, Martin Jay was non-executive Chairman of EADS UK limited.
In 2003 Martin Jay was appointed Chairman of Invensys plc. He retired from the Board of Invensys following the conclusion of the Annual General Meeting in July 2009. Over the last year he has led the collaborative procurement workstrand of HM Treasury’s Operational Efficiency Programme, which reported at the Budget 2009.
In recognition for his services to the Defence and Shipbuilding Industries, in January 2000 Martin received the Queen’s Award (UK) Commander of the Order of the British Empire.
Martin is currently Chairman of the Tall Ships Youth Trust and a Council Member of the RNLI. Martin is an Honorary Doctor of Laws (University of Portsmouth) and an Honorary Doctor of Business Administration (Southampton Solent Institute).
