Having graduated from Oxford with first class honours in PPE, James Joll embarked on his long and varied career starting as a journalist, writing for the Lex column for the Financial Times for five years. After that James moved to N.M. Rothschild & Sons where he was a Director for ten years. In 1980 James joined Pearson plc and was Finance Director there from 1985 until 1996. Between 1997 and 1999 James was a senior advisor for Donaldson Lufkin & Jenrette. Past board appointments have included the Chairmanship of Atrium Underwriting Plc., AIB Govett, Director of Equitas Holdings Ltd, Deputy Chairman of Jarvis Hotels plc, Non-Executive Director of The Economist Newspaper and membership of the Investment Committee of The Wellcome Trust. James was also previously Chairman of the Museums & Galleries Commission and a Trustee of the Wallace Collection and the Design Museum. James Joll’s current business appointment includes the Chairmanship of the Pearson Group Pension Trustee. He is also the Chairman of the Sir Winston Churchill Archives Trust and is a Trustee of The Henry Moore Foundation.
