Peter Barton, Adviser
Peter Barton has had a long career in the legal and investment banking arena and subsequently as a non-executive director. After 20 years practising Company and Securities law with clients including banks, merchant banks, The London Stock Exchange and various corporates and partnerships, in the mid 80s he joined L Messel & Co., the stockbroking subsidiary of Lehman Brothers, as co-head of the Corporate Finance Department. He then moved to Lehman, where he held the position of Managing Director and Head of European Financial Institutions in Europe. He was also Chairman of the European Investment Banking Commitments Committee, and a member of the European Investment Banking Operating Committee.

In 1995 Peter joined Robert Fleming & Co as Chief Operating Officer, Investment Banking Division. He was appointed Director of Robert Fleming Holdings in 1996 and after that held various other positions, including relationship management with West European banks and Head of Eastern Europe, Investment Banking.

Having retired in 2007 as Deputy Chairman and Senior Independent Director of Alliance & Leicester plc, Peter is now Chairman of the Bank’s pension fund trustees and his other current appointment in the listed company sector is a directorship of F & C US Smaller Companies plc. He was formerly a director of Lambert Fenchurch Group, prior to its going private, and of Bramdean Alternatives Ltd, a listed fund of funds managed by Nicola Horlick’s management team at Bramdean Asset Management LLP, of which he is now Chairman. Amongst other private company appointments, he is Chairman of Howard de Walden Estates Ltd, The Guinness Partnership and Chelsminster Group Ltd, and a director of easyGroup Holdings Ltd, the private holding company of Sir Stelios Haji Ioannou’s interests in easyJet plc and other companies.

Peter has also been involved with numerous charitable and voluntary organisations. He is a member of the Audit & Scrutiny Committee of Oxford University, the Finance Committee of The Royal Commission for the 1851 Exhibition and the Gloucester Diocean Finance Committee. He is a trustee of the Leonard Ingrams Foundation (Garsington Opera) and until recently was a trustee of the British Institute of International & Comparative Law. He is a Vice President of the Pilgrims Society of Great Britain and member of the International Bar Association and the Law Society.

Peter was High Sheriff of Greater London in 2000 and is a Deputy Lieutenant.
